Myopia is becoming an increasingly significant eye health issue. Today, around 30% of Canadian adults are affected. Children are also increasingly concerned, as it typically appears between the ages of 6 and 14 and continues to progress into adulthood. Screens, which are omnipresent in daily life, worsen this problem, along with genetics, which remains a key factor.
On a global scale, experts estimate that nearly half of the world’s population could be affected by 2050. Good exposure to natural light can, however, help slow this progression. Finally, it is observed that urban living contributes to higher rates of myopia, likely due to less time spent outdoors and a more sedentary lifestyle.
Today, myopia, or nearsightedness, can be corrected by reshaping the eye’s surface using an Excimer laser to reduce the eye’s curve and eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
