In 2021, approximately 3.7 million Canadians were living with cataracts. In 2018-2019, more than 350,000 cataract surgeries were performed in Canada, making it one of the most common surgical procedures.
The average age of patients undergoing cataract surgery in Canada is around 73 years old. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 51% of cases of blindness worldwide are due to cataracts.
Cataracts are most commonly caused by aging of the eyes. Fortunately, they can be easily and effectively removed through a minor surgical procedure.
A procedure that’s simpler than you’d think
Cataract surgery involves replacing the eye’s natural crystalline lens, which over time has lost its transparency, with an artificial intraocular lens. Several types of such lenses are available at our clinic to provide you with the one that’s right for you. During the procedure, Dr. Pop makes a tiny incision, removes the crystalline lens and inserts the intraocular lens in its place. Most patients notice their vision is already better one day after surgery. Vision continues to improve until the eye has healed completely, which takes approximately one month.
