What Is Refractive Intraocular Lenses?

What are Intraocular Lenses?
An intraocular lens, also known as a lens implant or a permanent lens, is a lens that is placed inside the eye to focus light rays and provide clear vision. It typically replaces or complements the crystalline lens, the natural lens of the eye.
The implant is introduced through a small incision and is typically carried out under local anesthesia in outpatient surgery. This means the patient does not require overnight hospitalization. Although each eye is operated on over several days, the intervention itself does not take more than 15 minutes, and recovery is relatively painless.

The Monofocal Lens
Monofocal lenses, or standard intraocular lenses, are most frequently used to treat cataracts. They contain a single focal point and improve vision at a single distance: near or far, depending on the patient’s needs. Although monofocal lenses reduce the need for the patient to wear glasses for different day-to-day activities, they may still need glasses for untreated distances.
The Multifocal Lens
Unlike monofocal lenses, multifocal lenses (bifocal and trifocal lenses) restore vision over multiple distances as they treat two or even three focal points.
In addition to treating cataracts and offering more freedom from glasses than monofocal lenses, toric multifocal lenses treat presbyopia and astigmatism, allowing the patient to see near and far. Aspherical multifocal lenses improve contrast sensitivity and overall image quality.
The Phakic Lens
Phakic intraocular lenses are designed to restore vision to patients with severe myopia and hyperopia. This type of IOL provides an excellent alternative for patients who are not eligible for laser eye surgery.
Unlike monofocal and multifocal lenses that replace the crystalline, the phakic lens is placed directly in front of it. This makes the procedure reversible, meaning that it can be removed if needed.
